about

Brudmarsch från Äppelbo is a traditional Swedish folk music composition often played at weddings and other festivals. It originates from the village of Äppelbo in the Dalarna region of Sweden.

As heathenry gradually got replaced, musicians were not allowed to play folksongs in the church. It was believed local musicians played the “instruments of the devil.“ Bridal marches, therefore, took place outside — when a wedding party marched to and from the church to where the wedding celebration was held.

Although the main melody is usually played on violin, Lyremadr has tamed the wild sound of his custom-built talharpa, resulting in a lively and upbeat performance.

The source material for Brúðalau is a folk tune known as “Brudmarsch from Äppelbo” — an important part of Sweden’s folk music heritage that continues to be enjoyed and celebrated to this day.

The original composer remains unknown as the melody has been transmitted orally from generation to generation since at least the 1500s or 1600s — perhaps even earlier.

Weddings have been a vital aspect of life in Scandinavia for thousands of years. For example, ancient “marriage vows” are demonstrated by the Tanum World Heritage site in Bohuslän, Sweden, where carved rock figures dating back some 3000 years provide insight into the traditions of the Nordic Bronze Age.
